Discover the history of Richmond and the Coal River Valley through the lens of the Ray and Frances Barnes Collection, a remarkable collection of photographs held by the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. The collection presents Richmond and the Coal River Valley in the years from the late 19th century to the 1970s, capturing the changes and continuities of the region and its people. The Barnes were among the visionaries who saw the potential of tourism as a strategy for preserving cultural and built heritage and developing the local economy. They ran Mrs Barnes’ Olde Time Portraits for many years from the early 1970s. They also collected a vast array of photographic negatives and prints, equipment and memorabilia, much of which was donated to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.
